CHAPTER ELEVEN

“FLO! WAIT UP.”

She halted with her finger on the Up button of the elevator. TC jogged toward her down the hall, her mahogany brown hair bouncing in its high ponytail. Her friend slowed to a fast walk as a door down the hallway opened and Beatrice Barker emerged in a cloud of talcum powder. “Hey, Bea.”

Flo turned and waved at the dusty matron. “How’s it going, Bea?”

“Wonderful. How are you ladies this morning?”

“Busy,” they both said at once and then laughed.

Bea nodded, moving on down the hall. “Gotta go, I’m playing bridge at Elisa’s place. If I’m late they’ll talk about me. Ta, ta!”

Elisa Kemp was Silver Hills’ non-official rumor queen. She knew everything about everybody and if she didn’t know something she knew how to massage her rumor mill to find it out. Flo had used Elisa’s talents and her network to great advantage in her last murder investigation.

She punched the button for the third floor and TC stepped inside with her. “Are you going up or down,” Flo asked.

“Up. I was going to see if Celia’s okay.”

“Me too, hun. I saw her before breakfast and she seemed a bit too happy if you know what I mean. I’m wondering if she’s playing ostrich again.”

TC nodded.

Celia had an almost inhuman ability to ignore bad things in favor of pretending none of it existed. Particularly her own airborne emissions during yoga. Agnes and Flo had been unfortunate enough to get stuck behind their elegant friend during weekly yoga sessions and it had been a terrifying experience...near supernatural...as Agnes liked to exclaim. But to look at Celia during her truck-driver-level emanations you’d never know she was farting like an old hound dog on a lima bean diet. She looked perfectly serene, in complete denial as the air quality degenerated to apocalyptic levels around her.

The elevator door slid open and Flo exited. Down the hallway, a man in a janitor’s uniform stepped away from Celia’s door and limped toward them. One foot was twisted the wrong way as if he had a defect. The man had a dusting rag in one hand and his face was mostly hidden beneath a dirty ball cap. All Flo could see was a thick, dark brown mustache that obscured his mouth. The janitor dipped his head as he passed them but didn’t speak. Not recognizing him, Flo glanced at his name badge. Unfortunately the thing had been stuck onto the Velcro carelessly and was hunched up in the center, unreadable. She glanced at TC. “New janitor?”

TC frowned. “News to me. I wish Richard would remember to tell me when he hires new employees.”

“Do you need to go speak with him? I’ll wait.”

TC shook her head. “I’ll find him after we talk to Celia.”

Vincent opened the door a second after TC knocked, his eyes widening when he saw the attractive, green-eyed activities director. “Well hello dere.”

TC’s mouth tightened. “Hello. I’m Trisha Colombo, the Activities Director at Silver Hills. I’m here to see Mrs. Angonetti.”

Flo wiggled her fingers and gave him a smile.
